Digital Tools in Physical Education: Effectiveness of Mobile Fitness Apps in Online PE Classes
Abstract
The integration of digital tools into physical education (PE) has become increasingly prominent, especially in the context of remote learning. This study explores the effectiveness of mobile fitness apps in enhancing student engagement, motivation, and physical activity levels in online PE classes. As traditional in-person instruction faced disruption, educators turned to digital solutions to maintain physical activity among students. Through a mixed-methods approach combining student surveys, fitness tracking data, and teacher interviews, the research assesses how mobile apps like MyFitnessPal, Nike Training Club, and Fitbit influence student participation and fitness outcomes. Findings indicate that these apps can significantly improve self-monitoring, goal-setting, and accountability, leading to higher levels of physical activity and more positive attitudes toward fitness. However, disparities in access to technology and varying levels of digital literacy present ongoing challenges. The study concludes that mobile fitness apps, when thoughtfully integrated into curricula, serve as effective tools for promoting active lifestyles in virtual PE environments.
